A GR8 end to a SHORT break.

it has been a great short holiday and today is the last day of my hols. i am supposed to be in my hostel right now, but i am still home. i can't seem to leave home cause i love being here so much. i am still home because i didn't get a tkt to get back to campus (thank GOD!). although it was only 3 weeks, i have done so many things and i felt like it was only yesterday that i came back here for my holidays. i sure did ENJOYED myself to the max this time round and i can bet that no one else had as much fun as i did. i am so LUCKY!!

so finally today, after so so so long, i went out with ROZEL and KINGS to OU. they wanted to get some shoes and do a spot of shopping. i tagged along to update meself on the current goss that were in the air but never reached my frequency. as soon as we reached the center of the new wing, the lion dance was about to start. we hung out around there as i wanted to catch the performance, by hook or by crook. i even climbed on the stage (where the drummers were set up) just ti have a better view of the lion dance. i don't care one!!

after the dance, we walked further and window shopped and talked and do all the normal girly stuffs till we got famished (for me that is, as i only had fruits and soda for lunch). so, we hung out at the place infront of jusco and ate our hightea. they had sushi and i had baked sweet potato.

where we had our simple hightea and gossiping session (plus camwhorring of course!!)

kings also decided to pierce her ears. suddenly, i felt the urge to do the same, but where else?? i am so running out of space!! actually, i am waiting for either one of my sisters to do it, i will be their companion in piercing. heheheh

the piercing session. see in the first picture: kings holding onto the pole for dear life. takut ke? wakakakk

patrick teoh smiled and sorta like talked to me (he is so friendly, and of course, BANGGA SEYYY!!)

i saw AFDLIN SHAUKI in person!! gawsh!! i was so damn starstrucked when i saw him. he is shorter than me by the way....

Goodbye my HOME. Goodbye my FUN (tune: JAMES BLUNT)

this is ZOO disappointing

Who would have thought that in my (very) young adult life, I would once again venture the vicinity of ZOO NEGARA MALAYSIA. The last time I was there was like when I was in junior high, when I took my 2 adorable sisters for a zoo day. After such time, I would think that the zoo would be so much better now. Boy, was I TOTALLY wrong!

The welcoming disappointment was the entrance to the parking. Ok, it is understandable that is was a SATURDAY, which by logic means that the management should do something to accommodate the flood of visitors that the would expect on a SATURDAY. Get this, we had to queue to get into the parking lot! And the best part was that, they opened only 1 (ONE) side of the gate to the entrance of the car park. Like hello!!! You are supposed to open both gates to allow more visitors in. Not shun them away like so….motto: REDUNDANCY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

The welcoming committee: the JAM Only 1 (ONE) gate is opened

The ticketing system has also changed. It became WORSE! You buy your ticket at a whole different building, and then, you enter at another. And the have this gazillion volunteers to make work “more efficient” by jotting down the number of visitors, putting on the wrist band for you, taking the wrist band off for you as you exit, and all that jazz, just to show the “friendliness” and the “welcoming” effect of the place. Gawsh! You know, I seriously think that these volunteers should instead help clean up the place and take good care of the animals instead!

But nevertheless, we braved ourselves and put our hopes on HIGH as we enter.
Arms together now. Lets enjoy ourselves!! (not….)
We were very impressed when we were welcomed by these stunning sights: the greenery, the animals, the ZOO. My adrenaline was on SUPER HIGH! After about 5 minutes (literally), it went to DOWNLOW. Why, you ask? Well, cause after the elephants (which looked kinda stressed because they were taunted by the visitors who are trying to feed them with food that you have to buy from the zoo which costs RM1 a pop, they are really smart in making money), there were nothing (I’m not kidding!!) else interesting to see. This is a ZOO right? But what I see most is people, more people, stupid trains, empty animal conservatories, more and more people, food places, trash, stressed animals, and irritating souls. But where are the animals??

…eatery that sells food which costs more than a proper restaurant, and yet it is so trashy. Where are the volunteers? Or the cleaners?

Some (the only animals that were actually visible) of the animal pictures that I managed to take shots of. Most of the time, I was shooting the floras instead of the faunas, and yeah, of course, camwhorring was on the agenda (how could ever not be??)

They look sad don’t they?
Last time, when they took out the animals from their conservatories, you could go there and take pictures with these animals for FREE. You could pat them, stroke them, pamper them, anything! NOW, to have your pictures taken, you’d have to pay RM15 for it!! One miserable picture is RM15!! And if you bring your videocam, you’d have to pay RM15 to take it into the ZOO!! What the hell is all this? All they think about is $$, where the F**k is the QUALITY? In some animal poo? Up their asses? Gawsh, I am so bloody disappointed. Nothing like this is in PERTH NATIONAL ZOO.

Don’t let me start talking about the toilets. Along the route that I was walking through in the zoo (which is almost the whole vicinity), I only came across 3 (THREE) public toilets. The first one had only 2 cubicles, smells worse than the cadaver unit of the anatomy department, full of people, and only had one cubicle working. The 2nd one that I went to was rather better than the 1st as it does not stink as bad and most of the cubicles are working (I assume there were about 6 cubicles). The 3rd one however, I didn’t take a look at it. Yah, went in though, she didn’t complain about it, so I guess it is feasible.

All in all, it was a total disaster. Don’t waste your time going there unless the authorities take REAL actions in making the place a better destination.

So damn HAMPEH!

Uncle Chin Chai, more like.

'Twas the afternoon of the 2nd day of chinese new year 2008. i can't believe that they are so many shops that are closed, even the ones that are owned by the non-chinese who i assume very much do not celebrate CNY. anyway, we decided to go to ikano to have our lunch since we were already out at that moment and ikano seemed to be the most feasible one to go to. because mama and yah were really, hungry, they decided to have their lunch at UNCLE CHIN's FAMOUS CHICKEN RICE (SUPERBOWL) eatery. about awhile back, we stopped eating here cause there was no HALAL certificate owned by the eatery. now that we saw the HALAL certificate proudly displayed by the owner, we stopped by to have some "FAMOUS" chicken rice.
the setup was very much the passe kopitiam style. bore.... bore.... *yaaaawwwwnnnn*
ALL of the workers there are INDONESIANS. they do not have proper uniforms nor do they serve you well. the place used to be service at the table concept. now, we have to self serve and yet, in the tab, they still charge you for service , WTF?? anyway, i didn't have anything there as i wasn't that hungry. so, i decided to go get my fix of popiah sisters crispy popiah, minus all the fried crispy stuffs. i also got one set for the others to have which is full of the delicious crispy stuffs.
mama and yah ordered chicken rice. mama's is steamed chiken drumstick that costs RM7.90 and yah's was roasted chicken wings that costs RM7.50
this was how it looked like:
.....very disappointing, don't you reckon? even i who was not eating this dish felt like crying bloody tears seeing the way the dish is served and how minute the quantity was. moreover, the rice was not cooked at all!

they both had warm barley which costs RM2.50 a pop. at least there were no complaints against this. but then again, barley always taste the same yeah?
the unfinished business: they couldn't finish the meal because the rice was uncooked but they had to eat something as they were very hungry. so, they finished the chicken and quarter of the rice that were served.

thank GOD there was POPIAH SISTERS that came to the rescue. the popiah helped to fill in those growling stomachs that were disappointed by the WORST EVER MEALS!

P/S: don't ever WASTE your time and dough to eat there. if you are damn famished, i'd suggest the mamak stall about 7 shops away (ikea bound) from this damn eatery.
UNCLE CHIN'S FAMOUS CHICKEN RICE.....will not be so famous after this.

JJ and RUDY, where are they (my prizes, i mean)?

hmm... i have been stoked on the fact that i won the "say it to me baby, uhuh! uhuh!" bit about 3 weeks back and now, i am STILL waiting to be called to collect my bounty. but yet, nothing seem to be coming my way. today (8/2/08) i have been ringing the MORNING CREW of HITZ.FM since 0803 (now it is 0850, and i am still ringing them while typing this), but no answer. i am also listening to them now, they told me to call in if i haven't got my prize. how come they don't wanna pick up the call? this is a little redundant don't you think?

where are they?

can they hear me? or do they simply choose to NOT ANSWER the calls? but i just heard one girl got thru to make a dedication.....

all i can say is, JJ (you commented on my blog remember?) and RUDY from HITZ.FM MORNING CREW, i am DONE WAITING! i WANT my PRIZE (i am still ringing you till now you know....). this is how i look like, all dried as bone WAITING for your ppl to call ME.

subjects that are BEGGING to get trashed

this is PUREly MY point of view. i am pretty sure many would agree with me. i mean, seriously, sometimes, i don't even see the significance of these subjects existing and i could point out the REDUNDANCY of these subjects down to the T!

P/S: this is totally not in order. but ANDREW ZIMMERN is surely on the top of this list.

ANDREW ZIMMERN: he claims himself to be a CHEF. i BEG to differ. he doesn't even qualify the title of a cook, more like a kitchen helper, if you ask me. as a CHEF, he should be able to appreciate the diversity of food that is available in this world (like my IDOL: ANTHONY BOURDAIN), not to criticize it. he is not a food critic. he says that he is game for the hunt for most bizarre food, but he couldn't stomach DURIAN?? he says that it tastes like spoilt fermented onions (has he ever tasted spoilt fermented onions?) and smells really bad. he could eat bugs, some god-forsaken animal parts, and god-knows-what, but he can't eat simple stuffs that are available in most part of the world. a CHEF is supposed to RESPECT the culinary culture of other nations, but not him. oh no, he only successfully DISRESPECT them. weirdo.....

QUESTION: do you wear like THIS to have your dinner at a simple restaurant? i doubt.....

HANNAH TAN:she is the goddess of EVERY SINGLE MALAYSIAN GUY'S dream (whatever kind of dream that is). she is a host (the only thing that i know her hosting is animax), a former miss malaysia (gawsh, are you for real?), all in all, she is ALL THAT (or whatever...). it is not that i hate her for her successes, but the way she brings herself, especially in the recent december edition of animax where she greets everyone with "Bonjour, I'm Hannah Tan", yeah, we know who you are but you don't have to be all $Lu^^y when you read your line. and if you started off with french, go the distance and complete the sentence by saying "bonjour, je mapel hannah tan" is it so hard? (be smart abit la....). no need for the smouldering, come hither eye effect, hannah. it is ANIMAX, also targeted for YOUNG viewers. this ain't FHM.

MAY LEE: dubbed as the ASIAN OPRAH, she has her own talk show. aisshh.... how can she be compared to oprah? please la, oprah has built her career since prolly before i was born (or maybe a little after i was born). oprah is a mogul, a power woman, and almost all that may lee isn't. she don't even have to try. but may lee is showing her effort a little too much. she was on air in starworld for awhile, but where is she now? just a short-lived story of nothing? i guess so. it is not that i watch him , but coffee with karan has better reviews. asian oprah....what the.....?

AYO TECHNOLOGY:when i first heard this song, i was like "what technology is this? is it aiyo technology? i thought only malaysians use that word" well, well, well, i'm in for a surprise. ayo is just like a sound they make (read: uhuh, uhuh) to fill in the song. but it seems like it is a part of the title. moreover, this song degrades the ladies in so many ways possible. my brother told me to take a look at the lyric, i might like this song. i MIGHT NOT LIKE IT, more like. stupid song, lyrics with no meaning at all, very very very suitable for the ignorant.

ESURF SMART, NOT SMARTE

THE TAGLINE:have you heard of this line from somewhere? does it ring your cowbells? for those who are not familiar of this tagline, it is heard from a FLY community service message on the radio. i have heard this like a gazillion times but i have yet to figure what does it mean. if i were to hear it wrongly, it may be the fault of the announcer. but much to my delight, i did not hear it wrongly, i have checked with many ppl who have heard it and they too still cannot decipher the meaning of this tagline. it is like trying to solve the da vincci's code, only tougher. so dear community service message announcer of FLY.fm, if you ever come across this humble blog of mine, please do clarify the meaning of this mind boggling line. your help keeps me sane. thanks!

Nasi Lemak SS2 is so PHAT!

This place has existed way beyond my childhood years (that was not very long ago, mind you). it started off in the back alley of some houses in ss2. the business was started off by this very nice elderly couple that we got to know while dining at their gerai. we have known them so long that they know all about us and they keep on asking about each and every1 of us if it has been awhile since they last saw us.

now, they have moved away from that back alley but still in ss2. currently, they are located in the gerai area opposite the ss2 police station. the set up is nothing fancy, just a simple table top, where all their dishes are displayed and some tables and odd pieces of chairs for the patrons to have their food there. they share the location with other gerai owners and they sort of compliment each other. most of the time, people go there and have their nasi lemak on-the-go. even the rich and well-endowed go there to have their (daily) fix of nasi lemak. word of caution though, you have to be early to get your nasi lemak cause they finish fast and the queue is not for the people who are impatient.
THE SETUP: nothing fancy schmancy. it is not about the place, it ALL about the food when it comes to NASI LEMAK SS2
The rice is cooked in the most traditional way ever! they steam the rice with lemongrass and coconut milk, seasoned with salt. each grain of rice is separated from each other and the rice is cooked to perfection. the dishes are traditional nasi lemak dishes such as rendang (beef/chicken/kerang), sambal (sotong/tahu/kosong/udang/petai <-only available on saturdays), masak lemak (kaki ayam/telur), egg (fried/hardboiled), fried anchovies + fried peanuts, fresh cucumbers, and some more additions that i can't quite remember. the dishes are not so heavy as compared to nasi lemak at other places because they skim the oil, and the gravy is not so laden with coconut milk.
set 1: ayam masak lemak (2 pieces of chicken wings) + sambal udang + fresh cucumbers + fried anchovies and peanuts + half of hardboiled egg + steamed coconut rice
set 2: rendang ayam + rendang daging + half of hardboiled egg + fresh cucumbers + fried anchovies and peanuts + steamed coconut rice

set 3: kaki ayam masak lemak + rendang ayam + sambal kosong + fried anchovies and peanuts + fresh cucumbers + steamed coconut rice
The tab came up to RM28 (there are 2 other sets that we had to go. the dishes were different but nevertheless the quantities were almost the same) for 5 nasi lemaks, with each one averaging at about RM5.60.
We went away leaving the nasi lemak wrappers empty and clean!
Once you have THIS nasi lemak, no other nasi lemak can top it.
trust me, i can still REMEMBER the taste just by looking at these pix!!
F/N:Only TRY if you DARE.

10 BEST foods that SHOULD find their ways down your throat

1. Beets
These grungy-looking roots are naturally sweeter than any other vegetable, which means they pack tons of flavor underneath their rugged exterior.

Why they're healthy: Think of beets as red spinach. Just like Popeye's powerfood, this crimson vegetable is one of the best sources of both folate and betaine. These two nutrients work together to lower your blood levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory compound that can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Plus, the natural pigments -- called betacyanins -- that give beets their color have been proved to be potent cancer fighters in laboratory mice.

How to eat them: Fresh and raw, not from a jar. Heating beets actually decreases their antioxidant power. For a simple single-serving salad, wash and peel one beet, and then grate it on the widest blade of a box grater. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the juice of half a lemon.
You can eat the leaves and stems, which are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Simply cut off the stems just below the point where the leaves start, and wash thoroughly. They're now ready to be used in a salad. Or, for a side dish, sauté the leaves, along with a minced clove of garlic and a tablespoon of olive oil, in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook until the leaves are wilted and the stems are tender. Season with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice, and sprinkle with fresh Parmesan cheese.

2. Cabbage
Why it's healthy: One cup of chopped cabbage has just 22 calories, and it's loaded with valuable nutrients. At the top of the list is sulforaphane, a chemical that increases your body's production of enzymes that disarm cell-damaging free radicals and reduce your risk of cancer. In fact, Stanford University scientists determined that sulforaphane boosts your levels of these cancer-fighting enzymes higher than any other plant chemical.

How to eat it: Put cabbage on your burgers to add a satisfying crunch. Or, for an even better sandwich topping or side salad, try an Asian-style slaw. Here's what you'll need:

4 Tbsp peanut or canola oil
Juice of two limes
1 Tbsp sriracha, an Asian chili sauce you can find in the international section of your grocery store
1 head napa cabbage, finely chopped or shredded
1/4 cup toasted peanuts
1/2 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Whisk together the oil, lime juice, and sriracha. Combine the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl and toss with the dressing to coat. Refrigerate for 20 minutes before serving. The slaw will keep in your fridge for 2 days.

3. Guava
Guava is an obscure tropical fruit that's subtly acidic, with sweetness that intensifies as you eat your way to the center.

Why it's healthy: Guava has a higher concentration of lycopene -- an antioxidant that fights prostate cancer -- than any other plant food, including tomatoes and watermelon. In addition, 1 cup of the stuff provides 688 milligrams (mg) of potassium, which is 63 percent more than you'll find in a medium banana. And guava may be the ultimate high-fiber food: There's almost 9 grams (g) of fiber in every cup.

How to eat it: Down the entire fruit, from the rind to the seeds. It's all edible -- and nutritious. The rind alone has more vitamin C than you'd find in the flesh of an orange.

4. Swiss chard
Why it's healthy: A half cup of cooked Swiss chard provides a huge amount of both lutein and zeaxanthin, supplying 10 mg each. These plant chemicals, known as carotenoids, protect your retinas from the damage of aging, according to Harvard researchers. That's because both nutrients, which are actually pigments, appear to accumulate in your retinas, where they absorb the type of shortwave light rays that can damage your eyes. So the more lutein and zeaxanthin you eat, the better your internal eye protection will be.

How to eat it: Chard goes great with grilled steaks and chicken, and it also works well as a bed for pan-seared fish. Wash and dry a bunch of Swiss chard, and then chop the leaves and stems into 1-inch pieces. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large sauté pan or wok, and add two garlic cloves that you've peeled and lightly crushed. When the oil smokes lightly, add the chard. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until the leaves wilt and the stems are tender. Remove the garlic cloves and season the chard with salt and pepper.

5. Cinnamon
Why it's healthy: Cinnamon helps control your blood sugar, which influences your risk of heart disease. In fact, USDA researchers found that people with type-2 diabetes who consumed 1 g of cinnamon a day for 6 weeks (about 1/4 teaspoon each day) significantly reduced not only their blood sugar but also their triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Credit the spice's active ingredients, methylhydroxychalcone polymers, which increase your cells' ability to metabolize sugar by up to 20 times.

How to eat it: You don't need the fancy oils and extracts sold at vitamin stores; just sprinkle the stuff that's in your spice rack (or in the shaker at Starbucks) into your coffee or on your oatmeal.

6. Purslane
Although the FDA classifies purslane as a broad-leaved weed, it's a popular vegetable and herb in many other countries, including China, Mexico, and Greece.

Why it's healthy: Purslane has the highest amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fats of any edible plant, according to researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The scientists also report that this herb has 10 to 20 times more melatonin -- an antioxidant that may inhibit cancer growth -- than any other fruit or vegetable tested.

How to eat it: In a salad. Think of purslane as a great alternative or addition to lettuce: The leaves and stems are crisp, chewy, and succulent, and they have a mild lemony taste. Look for it at your local farmer's market. It's also available at some Whole Foods stores, as an individual leafy green or in premade salad mixes.

7. Pomegranate juice
Why it's healthy: Israeli scientists discovered that men who downed just 2 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for a year decreased their systolic (top number) blood pressure by 21 percent and significantly improved bloodflow to their hearts. What's more, 4 ounces provides 50 percent of your daily vitamin C needs.

How to drink it: Try 100 percent pomegranate juice. It contains no added sugars, and because it's so powerful, a small glassful is all you need.

8. Goji berries
These raisin-size fruits are chewy and taste like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. More important, these potent berries have been used as a medicinal food in Tibet for over 1,700 years.

Why they're healthy: Goji berries have one of the highest ORAC ratings -- a method of gauging antioxidant power -- of any fruit, according to Tufts University researchers. And although modern scientists began to study this ancient berry only recently, they've found that the sugars that make goji berries sweet reduce insulin resistance -- a risk factor of diabetes -- in rats.

How to eat them: Mix dried or fresh goji berries with a cup of plain yogurt, sprinkle them on your oatmeal or cold cereal, or enjoy a handful by themselves.

9. Dried plums
You may know these better by the moniker "prunes," which are indelibly linked with nursing homes and bathroom habits. And that explains why, in an effort to revive this delicious fruit's image, producers now market them under another name.

Why they're healthy: Prunes contain high amounts of neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids, antioxidants that are particularly effective at combating the "superoxide anion radical." This nasty free radical causes structural damage to your cells, and such damage is thought to be one of the primary causes of cancer.

How to eat them: As an appetizer. Wrap a paper-thin slice of beef or turkey bacon around each dried plum and secure with a toothpick. Bake in a 400°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until the plums are soft and the bacon is crispy. Most of the fat will cook off, and you'll be left with a decadent-tasting treat that's sweet, savory, and healthy.

10. Pumpkin seeds
These jack-o'-lantern waste products are the most nutritious part of the pumpkin.

Why they're healthy: Downing pumpkin seeds is the easiest way to consume more magnesium. That's important because French researchers recently determined that men with the highest levels of magnesium in their blood have a 40 percent lower risk of early death than those with the lowest levels. And on average, men consume 353 mg of the mineral daily, well under the 420 mg minimum recommended by the USDA.

How to eat them: Whole, shells and all. (The shells provide extra fiber.) Roasted pumpkin seeds contain 150 mg of magnesium per ounce; add them to your regular diet and you'll easily hit your daily target of 420 mg. Look for them in the snack or health-food section of your grocery store, next to the peanuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds.
